What is a Urogynecologist?
As men age, it is very common for their prostate to continue growing larger, which will often cause issues between age 50 and 60, and beyond. An enlarged prostate is medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. This condition describes a prostate that has grown large enough to exceed its natural boundaries and begin to push down on the urethra.
The board-certified urologists at Potomac Urology provide treatment for BPH at our offices in Alexandria and Woodbridge, VA. Learn about your treatment options and call to schedule your appointment today!
A urogynecologist is a physician who specializes in disorders of the pelvic floor. It combines knowledge of both urology and gynecology to help diagnose and treat symptoms. Often, a urogynecologist works to restore the pelvic floor anatomy that has weakened.
How Does a Urogynecologist Differ from a Gynecologist?
Gynecologists specialize in the health of the female reproductive system. This includes the uterus, cervix, vagina, and ovaries.
Urologists specialize in diagnosing and treating urinary tract disorders for female and male patients, along with the male reproductive system. Urologists have specialty training in both conservative treatments and surgical management of the kidneys and urinary tract.
Urogynecologists specialize in treating women with complex benign pelvic conditions, including lower urinary tract and sexual health disorders. They are trained in the comprehensive management of pelvic floor conditions.
What is the Pelvic Floor?
The pelvic floor muscles are located between the tailbone and the pubic bone within the pelvis. They support the bowel and bladder.
In females, the pelvic floor muscles also support the uterus and the vagina. These muscular bands are called sphincters to encircle the urethra, vagina, and anus as they pass through the pelvic floor. If the pelvic floor muscles become weak, you may experience prolapse, where there is no longer enough support for the uterus. You may also experience incontinence or the loss of bladder control.

Shawn Mendonca, MD
Dr. Mendonca practices all areas of Urology and has a special interest in urologic reconstruction. Individuals may lose function from aging, prior failed surgeries or side effects from cancer treatments. Men may develop urethral strictures, voiding dysfunction or erectile dysfunction. Women may suffer from incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. Each patient is unique – there are medical concerns, but also individual social circumstances. To every problem, there are many solutions. Dr. Mendonca’s philosophy of care is to listen to each patient and help them find a treatment that is best suited for their individual needs and lifestyle. Medication alone may fix many problems, but if surgery is necessary, he would be able to offer cutting-edge and advanced techniques in open, endoscopic, robotic or microscopic surgery. Dr. Mendonca believes that every patient should be treated equally and like his own family member.
